Cummer Museum Exhibit: “Women’s Rights Movement” by Teresa Cook “Women’s Flying Hat”

Shirley Slade.

I created this painting by accident through researching women in flying hats and I came across Shirley Slade. She was apart of the experiment of replacing male with women pilots due to a shortage of pilots, in 1942. I loved the hat on her and cigarette smoking was so different for women during those times, like an act of rebellion.

This tiny painting was created with watercolor and acrylic paint. The image is 2” x 2” in a 4” x 4” frame.

“Women on Bicycles in the Park”, (2024) A little detail in the process of completion. This painting is 24” x 36” on yupo paper. I used watercolor and acrylic ink to create this painting. Visit the Cummer Museum to see the completed painting till June 16, 2024.

Check back this week for my next post about my “Women’s Rights Movement” Exhibit at the Cummer Museum and why I painted it. Also, don’t forget to stop by and see the exhibit till June 16, 2024.

Artist Meet N Greet is March 12, 2024 6-7:30pm.
