How to Watercolor a Butterfly Workshop at Ritz Theatre

What is Plein Air painting? Painting outside of course and taking your time, while doing it. We will work on sketching techniques, how to use watercolor, using watercolor brushes, and just simply creating. We will also be sketching quick sketch’s of what we will see visually and painting them very detailed as in Plein air painting.

I found out about the Urban Sketchers in 2019 while following another artist on social media and realized that it would be cool to meet other sketchers like myself. I traveled to Amsterdam in 2019 to see the Urban Sketchers Symposium and little did I know how many countries were connected to this world wide chapter. I was intrigued because there were so many watercolorists, that like to paint in random places like I do.

With teaching watercolor for the last 5 years, I have learned a lot about watercolor and how to take part in the things we see and paint them. With this workshop we will paint outside as an Plein Air Painter and Urban Sketcher and I will teach some skills to help you become the traveling artist you want to be. I will teach you some watercolor skills and how to see what you are looking at and create. We will be painting/sketching downtown as well. Come sketch with me at MOCA.

Learning how to paint watercolor has been the most fulfilling aspect of my art career. I have learned to appreciate color in so many ways and how you can easily transform something you see into your own form of art. Now let me show you.

First week, we will go over some of my everyday materials and also ones that you can use to create with. Then, we will work on basic methods of painting watercolor through, making a color wheel, layering colors, color mixing, wet-n-wet method, dry brush method and more. All these basics of watercolor can be applied to all your future watercolor fun. Second week, we will talk and using the methods from the previous week on different types of papers. We will work on Cold-pressed, Hot-pressed, Mixed Media and Yupo paper. Third week, we will work on my favorite drawing method called, “blind contour drawing”. The last week, we will use the watercolor methods and this drawing style to create an image of Jacksonville.

This workshop is to help you learn how to paint with watercolor and use the tools to create your own art for future projects. Come learn watercolor with me. I am so excited to paint with you.

This workshop also includes a Dot card of the colors I use for painting, my How to Watercolor PDF printout, and a Round watercolor Brush.

All supplies will be provided.

Materials Exploration with Watercolor, Pastel, Watercolor Pencil and Modeling Paste

Materials Exploration with Watercolor, Pastel, Watercolor Pencil and Modeling Paste

I am so excited to offer this class. Lately a lot of what I do is includes watercolor, pastel, and watercolor pencils. I am happy that I get to share my exploration of these materials with you.

For this workshop, we will use watercolor as a start to explore these materials and then we will create a landscape from these materials. I will show you different techniques to use each materials before we create our very own painting.

We will be starting with watercolor first, then we will add the dry mediums, pastels and watercolor pencils, to help create different layers and textures. The cool thing about these materials is they can be added to wet watercolor. Next, we will add molding paste to form different shapes on your paper with a palette knife. We will create a landscape image using all these materials and I will show you how to do  it.

I love creating with these materials because there is no limit to what you can do since they all work well together. I love to create little abstracts or landscapes.

This workshop is to help you learn how to use these materials to explore watercolor, and use these tools to create your own art for future projects. Let’s explore these materials together.

This workshop also includes a Faber-Castel Watercolor Pencil, a Soft-pastel, and a Round watercolor Brush, to take home.

All supplies will be provided. Beginners Welcome!!!
