Cummer Museum Exhibit: “Women’s Rights Movement” by Teresa Cook “Women on Bicycles in the Park”

Remember when I mentioned the imagery of women arriving on bicycles during the early days of the Women’s Rights Movement? This particular moment captivated me, driving me to immortalize it in paint. Those bicycles symbolized a newfound freedom for women — a tool that revolutionized the way they dressed and navigated their world, offering unprecedented mobility and liberation.

This painting was primarily centered around the bicycles and the attire of the women featured. To enhance the collection, I incorporated gold watercolor paint into each piece. The use of gold on the tires serves to highlight the prosperity associated with the concept of freedom that resonates with me. Ultimately, the wheels symbolize the journey to their destinations.

“Women on Bicycles in the Park”, (2024) A little detail in the process of completion. This painting is 24” x 36” on yupo paper. I used watercolor and acrylic ink to create this painting. Visit the Cummer Museum to see the completed painting till June 16, 2024.
